In the Amazon region in just ten years more than 1,200 new animal and plant species have been discovered. This was announced by the WWF in a report that was presented at the CITES Conference in Nagoya, Japan. Among the new species include a frog with flammenfarbenem head, a new Flussdelfinart, a bald-headed, multicolored parrot and a new kind of Anaconda.

“On the one hand fascinating because it shows how much life in the uncharted Amazon is available; other hand also alarming because many more undiscovered species extinction threat, before they are discovered,” said WWF Amazon expert Roberto Maldonado. In the past 50 years, 17 percent of the Amazon area had been destroyed by humans. The increasing global demand for meat, soy and biofuels are the major reasons for this.

Overall, before the publication of 637 new plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 39 mammals and 16 birds. The WWF had summarized research reports from the period between 1999 and 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

Biologists played in front of meerkats tapes of conspecifics. They discovered: the animals are more similar than the people thought.

Meerkats can, like man, distinguished on the basis of their own kind voice. The behavioral biologist at the University of Zurich reported with reference to field trials in South Africa’s Kalahari Desert. Previously this capability was only in some primates – for example, in monkeys and humans – have been found.

Researchers have found near Augsburg, a 15 million year old fossil Python. This is a proof that the giant snakes crawled once by Germany.

As far north has never been found a Python: Some 15 million years old fossil of the sensational heat-loving giant snake, the scientists have discovered near Augsburg.

Found were the vertebrae of the 3.5-meter-long boa constrictor in a petrified fossil site near Gries Becker cell. The researchers see this as evidence that there was a relatively small time window, crawled into the Pythons also through Central Europe.

Those who believe that fish are dumb mistake: Red Piranhas have an acoustic repertoire – especially when danger threatens them.

Piranhas can bark, croak and give drum-like noises – and inform their counterparts in fighting special messages. These species have thus assumed a larger acoustical repertoire than previously reported Sandie Millot, Pierre Vandewalle and Eric Parmentier at the University of Liege in the “Journal of Experimental Biology.”

Clicker training is a term nowadays many dog ??owners. Originally used in working with wildlife and zoo animals, has this training method in the mid nineties in the U.S. the way across the ocean to Europe and made it enjoys more widespread: the animal learns that the click advertising a food reward immediately following. Henceforth, the click may be used to inform the animal in training “done right! For what you are doing at the moment of the click, you get the reward.”

The focus is on the desired behavior – it will be rewarded if the animal shows the behavior to see that people want – anything else is simply ignored. A particularly impressive aspect for me personally of clicker training is that the animal must find out for yourself, so it can earn a click and treat. It must, or rather it should try and offer behaviors and is then directed through the clicks to the destination, its movements are shaped (shaping – a little more on that later).

So far, so good. With dogs is all very nice, I hear you say. But with cats? Cats can not educate … And certainly not train … Is something not even against the nature of our independent, individualistic furry roommate? The just do only what they want … And that is exactly the keyword: Cats do what is good for them and what they’re having fun – and good clicker training for cats can be very great pleasure that fills the stomach with delicious things. Clicker training does not use any coercion and punishment, with which one would be convicted in cats as well as elephants, lions and tigers to failure. There are no physical distress. The cat decides in each moment of the training, whether they want to participate – and with the right reward they want guarantees. However, you should consider carefully whether you want to start to clicker with your cat. The second board of the association has visited the animal shelters around the Balaton personally and made a picture of the local conditions. Against the need there especially in winter, the club wanted to do something. He therefore turned to the local press and then the Salzach Courier published in issue 8 / 2007 a newspaper report.

In a sensational helpfulness donated animal friends from Bavaria, citizens of Burghausen, the surrounding neighbors and the communities bordering Austria were no longer needed kennels. These were collected by the association to them (about 70 km from Lake Balaton) to the shelter after Philip Kaposvar / Hungary to bring. In addition there are a lot of dog food and blankets.

Unfortunately, the SPCA is now missing but the money to transport the dog kennels on: Truck rental and petrol costs EUR 400 each.
